Trade Show Exhibit
Height & Line of Sight Rules

Every trade show in the United States enforces height restrictions and line of sight rules to ensure fair visibility for all exhibitors. The basic principle is simple: no exhibitor should block the view of the exhibits next to them. Anyone standing in the aisle — roughly 20 feet away — should be able to see into the front portion of every exhibit along that row.

That's why height restrictions are stricter in the front half of the exhibit and more relaxed in the back. Below is a complete breakdown by exhibit type.

Quick Reference Table

Exhibit TypeMax HeightLine of Sight Restriction
Inline / Linear (10×10, 10×20)8 ft4 ft max in front half (first 5 ft from aisle)
Inline Combo (3+ exhibits combined)8 ft4 ft max within 10 ft of adjoining exhibit
Perimeter12 ft4 ft max in front 5 ft from aisle
Island (30×30+)Up to 20 ftVaries by show — check with show management
Island (20×20+)16 ftOpen all sides — generally no line of sight restriction

These are general US trade show industry standards. Specific shows and venues may have additional or different requirements. Always confirm with show management before finalizing your exhibit design.

Detailed Breakdown by Exhibit Type

Inline / Linear

10×10, 10×20

Maximum Height

8 ft (2.44 m)

Line of Sight Restriction

4 ft (1.22 m) max in front half (first 5 ft from aisle)

The most common exhibit type at trade shows. The space is split into two halves: the back half (rear 5 ft) can reach 8 ft, while the front half (first 5 ft from the aisle) is restricted to 4 ft. Counters, monitors on stands, product displays, and any other elements in the front half cannot exceed 4 feet. Towers, walls, shelving, and signage can go up to 8 feet but only in the back half.

Inline Combo

10×30, 10×40 (3+ inline exhibits combined)

Maximum Height

8 ft (2.44 m)

Line of Sight Restriction

4 ft (1.22 m) max within 10 ft of adjoining exhibit

When three or more inline exhibits are combined into a single larger space (e.g., a 10×30), the standard inline height rules apply with an additional restriction: all elements must stay at 4 ft or below within 10 feet of any adjoining exhibitor's space. This ensures that even in a larger combined footprint, neighboring exhibitors are not blocked.

Perimeter

Back wall / perimeter exhibits

Maximum Height

12 ft (3.66 m)

Line of Sight Restriction

4 ft (1.22 m) max in front 5 ft from aisle

Perimeter exhibits are positioned along the outer walls of the exhibition hall. Because they back up against the venue wall rather than another exhibitor, they are allowed a taller backwall of up to 12 feet. However, the front 5 feet from the aisle still follows the standard 4 ft line of sight restriction.

Island

30×30 and larger

Maximum Height

Up to 20 ft (6.10 m)

Line of Sight Restriction

Varies by show — check with show management

Large island exhibits (30x30 and larger) are open on all four sides. These larger configurations allow significantly taller structures, but specific height restrictions and line of sight rules vary from show to show. Always confirm the exact regulations with show management before finalizing your exhibit design.

Island

20×20, 20×30, 20×40, and larger

Maximum Height

16 ft (4.88 m)

Line of Sight Restriction

Open all sides — generally no line of sight restriction

Island exhibits are open on all four sides, giving exhibitors the most freedom in design and height. With no neighboring exhibitors sharing a wall, there are generally no line of sight restrictions. Hanging signs can typically reach 16 feet, though maximum heights vary by venue and show. Island exhibits are the premium option for brands that want maximum visibility and foot traffic.

The Basic Rule Explained

For a standard 10×10 inline exhibit, the space is split into two halves:

1

Back Half (Rear 5 ft)

8 ft (2.44 m)

Towers, walls, shelving, signage, and tall graphics can go up to 8 feet in the back half of the exhibit.

2

Front Half (First 5 ft from aisle)

4 ft (1.22 m)

Counters, product displays, monitors on stands, and any other elements in the front half cannot exceed 4 feet.

What Happens If You Violate the Rules?

Show management conducts walk-throughs before the show opens. If your exhibit violates height or line of sight rules, you may be required to modify or remove non-compliant elements — at your own expense and on a tight timeline. In severe cases, your exhibit may not be allowed to open until corrections are made. This is why it's critical to design with these rules in mind from the start.

Why Line of Sight Matters

Fair Visibility for All Exhibitors

The line of sight rule ensures that every exhibitor along a row is visible to attendees walking the aisle. Without these rules, a tall exhibit could completely block the view of smaller neighboring exhibits.

Show Management Compliance

Violating height restrictions can result in forced modifications on the show floor — at your expense. In extreme cases, show management may require you to dismantle non-compliant elements before the show opens.

Design Optimization

Understanding the rules upfront allows your exhibit designer to maximize impact within the allowed dimensions. A well-designed 8 ft backwall with strategic lighting can be more effective than a non-compliant 12 ft wall that gets flagged.

Every OTSS Exhibit Is Fully Compliant

Every exhibit designed by Orlando Trade Show Stand is engineered to comply with US trade show height and line of sight regulations. Our design team accounts for these rules from the very first 3D rendering — so you never have to worry about show-floor surprises. We also review venue-specific requirements for every show to ensure your exhibit meets all local regulations.
